Meet David, Omega’s new Director

David joined Omega as Director in May 2026, bringing experience from both the charity and adult social care sectors. As Omega looks ahead to its 20th anniversary and the next stage of its development, we caught up with David to find out a little more about his background, his first few months at Omega and what lies ahead.

Tell us a little about your background before joining Omega.

Before joining Omega, I worked for a number of national cancer charities, including Teenage Cancer Trust and Breast Cancer Now. More recently, I was Chief Officer at Partners in Care, a Shropshire-based not-for-profit membership organisation supporting adult social care providers.

Hopefully my experience in leading and developing teams that deliver support services will benefit Omega, as well as partnership working with a range of organisations including local authorities, the NHS, other charities and companies.

What attracted you to Omega?

Since relocating to Shropshire in 2020 with my wife, who has come home having been born and growing up in Shropshire, I became aware of Omega and the great work it does to support people who are lonely or isolated. The opportunity to join Omega as its new Director was perfectly timed as I left my previous full-time role in April 2026 when I turned 60.

What have your first few months at Omega been like?

Since joining in May, I’ve been getting to know Omega, our staff and volunteers and the work we do through Chatterbox, Letterbox and Pupil Pals.

What is obvious from my conversations with everyone I’ve spoken to since I joined Omega is the regular human connection our volunteer befrienders provide to people who may otherwise have very little. What all our support has in common is simple, personal and powerful – a regular phone call, letter, card or conversation can help someone feel heard, valued and connected again.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I’m a keen runner and a qualified England Athletics running coach and run Pontesbury Runners in Shropshire where I live with my wife. I particularly enjoy the challenge of events such as the recent Wem 10k, as you can see from the photo above!

Back to Omega, and what’s next over the coming months?

Over the coming months, we’ll be developing a new three-year Strategic Plan for 2027–30, which will help shape the next phase of Omega’s work to reduce the impact of loneliness across the UK.

It’s important that the people who know Omega best are part of that process, so we’ll be asking the people we support, as well as our volunteers, for their views on what our priorities should be over the next three years.

My personal ambition is that Omega can support even more people across the UK who are facing loneliness or social isolation. Most people feel lonely sometimes, for many different reasons, but too many people are facing loneliness or social isolation every day, and Omega should be there for everyone in this position.

And 2027 is a particularly special year for Omega?

It is! Next April marks Omega’s 20th birthday, and we’ll be celebrating throughout 2027. We’re also planning a number of challenges and targets around the number 20, which we hope will help us support even more people experiencing loneliness and social isolation. There will be more to share about our 20th anniversary plans in the coming months.

Finally, is there anything you’d like to say to the people who support Omega?

Whether you receive support from Omega, volunteer your time, fundraise, donate or support us in other ways, a huge thank you for being part of Omega. Our work is only possible because of the many people who choose to be part of it, and I’m looking forward to building on everything Omega has achieved as we approach our 20th year.
